Were it not for the twitterverse I wouldnt have found a decent paper to present at journal club. More importantly I was turned onto a selection of blogs detailing some aspects of professional science life. One of these was called damngoodtechnician, and sadly it has been disconnected due to corporate policy, or something. I am compelled to post some thoughts as they come so that this resource of blog action continues to grow.
Twitter is amazing. Its amazing in how informative it is, and its amazing for useless it can be. If you look for things at the right time, you may see a glimmer of useful information. Like when you walk into the lunch room and the methods section is right there and those people are literally doing that exact thing you were thinking about doing. Faster, cheaper and with 50% less hand waving.
DamnGoodTechnician discussed working in some sort of pharma environment. In addition to being entertaining, the writing was encouraging. For instance, the grass is greener feeling that occurs near the academo-industrial fence can be quite strong. Until hear a little of what the weather is like over there. Working in science is extremely unique, more so than most professions I would say. Theres a higher level of uncertainty, a more international cast of characters, and and extremely large range of lucrativeness, if thats not a word. So anyway I am glad that I got to read her words for something like two months. Maybe some website has stored all her writings. Wayback machine fails.
Science is a good deal about information. Communities work together to get things figured out. By posting thoughts related to this kooky profession maybe people will be encouraged one day like I was by ple to enjoy it and excel at it. Other relatively unique thing about science; science is really hard work. A great deal of hard work will get you somewhere in this job. Tons of people work very hard, however, and do not find what they would call Success. A lot of it has to do with timing. Hopefully something here will end up appearing to someone at some useful time.
